My precious daughter has confirmed and recorded on film a first bubba  and ...drumroll.........dad is a Brit. I guess this makes me an honorary Brit by proxy and puts me in the, 'looking for cheap airfares to Heathrow line up with most of the forum.' At least it's got the common sense to be born in the low season.

My first impulse was to make it a shawl. Isn't that what grandmothers are meant to do? Am a bit stunned, this is very unexpected. They bought a house in Old Windsor, which is closer to Heathrow than their London place, and I have bought a crochet hook and wool, and have no idea what to do next.

Talk about, 'the best laid plans for mice and men,' going completely belly up!

Well congratulations kiwi! I'm sure that you'll make a great granny, with or without a shawl!!

Our daughter was 21 when she sprung her surprise on us and 11 months after the first was born, the second was born! 2 grandsons with only 11 months between them in age, and believe me, having experienced being a grandad now, I would have loved to have become a grandad years ago! ......... not that it was possible though!

Congratulations Kiwi.
Not sure about the shawl. My son is married to an English girl and living over there. I knitted a lovely (or so I thought) pullover and hat for my first Grandchild, and my dil mentioned the lovely buttons.
Being so far away, I seem to be a Grandma, but not a Grandma. I see my Grandchildren on skype and go over there once a year.
At least you will be able to see them more often

I shouldn't really complain as my MIL couldn't even talk to her Grandchildren, as they were in NZ and didn't speak Greek

Thanks guys...shawl seemed the correct procedure on being told one is an incumbent granny. You are probably right Rheia, it wll likely get put at the back of a cupboard. Probably she would be happier if you buy somethng from Baby Gap. I know mine always talks about that shop. We must meet up when you go there next time and compare notes. Mine have bought a house in Old WIndsor so just a bit out of London.

KP you are an old hat at this then.

Not so much of the 'old' thank you! :\

I've got 8 years before retirement age and my daughter started really young! So I've still got my 'L' plates on!

Well done Kiwi, I see the importance of your crochet web site saving post now! Get those fingers working!

See KP deny the old age bit! A bit to quick if you ask me.
Now where is the retirement age 80 that makes him 72?

Does not deny being hattered eh?

Ha...can't knit and it seems a lot easier to wield one hook, than two needles nikanne and thanks for the offer.

The scan photo reminded me of a flat little elephant with a tail...naturally I kept this weird piece of information to myself and ooohed a lot. Also sent her a list of words mothers need to use from time to time, like, 'because I said so.'

Ha...payback time. What a mean granny, thinking back at all the times I threw hissy fits at the kids and gave them the...'wait till you have kids,' retort.

Well if the crochet thing doesn't work, the next thread will be asking for a website that sells handmade stuff that I can rip lables off and present with love :)) crochet plagiarism.
