Does anybody know just how the "blood system" works in Greece? Where do the hospitals get their blood supplies from; a friend in Rhodes says if you have an operation you have to go back later when you're better and donate some blood in return, which sounds open to abuse. I have seen no posters or TV ads for donating blood as we have in the UK or ads offering to buy your blood as you see in the USA. Just interested in case one of the "sporty" drivers on the National Highway puts me in hospital one day!

If you are in need of blood the hospital asks your reletives and friends to donate. Of course a fakelaki will secure the blood you need too. You can give blood. I'm not sure of the proceedure as when I tried to give, they wouldn't except blood from a person who lived in Britain between certain dates (mad cow days). Theres an old thread about blood here

We were in Iraklio hospital today arranging for my husband to go in for an operation next week. He was told to arrange for 3 people to give blood in exchange for the blood he would need for the op. Unfortunately these cannot be British because of BSE, so we will have to ask some Greek friends to do it for us. We live near Hania and the blood can be donated at the blood bank there - the donors do not have to go to Iraklio. Tomorrow we will find out who our true friends are I think that if you go in as an emergency they just give you the blood anyway - but don't quote me on that. Regards, maggie

Quote: Unused plasmaThere are some 25 million tons of blood plasma donated by Greeks that has not been used even though the country has regularly imported the fluid from a Dutch company since 2001, Health Minister Mariliza Xenoyiannakopoulou said yesterday. The minister revealed that the blood plasma had been shipped to the Netherlands between 2004 and 2008 to be treated and then returned to Greece. However, these shipments of fluid had not been tested for several viruses and therefore cannot be used. Xenogiannakopoulou said the failure to use the plasma was an insult to all those who had donated blood in recent years. http://www.ekathimerini.com/4dcgi/_w_ar ... 010_115300

Pretty disgusting. What an absolute waste of a valuable resource. The worry is that maybe some hospital will decide to use some. Nothing would surprise me.
