Saw this on Yahoo and, although I knew it was distorted I was not sure by how much. I was told that England and Wales could fit 5 times into Texas. It was brought on by the 6 nations rugby. I was thinking how a small country like the UK could supply 3 decent rugby teams. I guess the same is true with football but with less success, but then if you take all the foreign players out, the premier league wouldn’t be so good.

In Rome there are stone tablets showing how it grew from a city to control vast swathes of Europe and the Mediterranean. This little island did the same with the Empire.

Where the hell did we go wrong?

Just what do you mean by “going wrong”?

You mean, in the old days it was wrong for England to subject all those countries and people or you mean it’s wrong England does no longer…

The latter. We have become a nation of whingers. I don’t subscribe to being made to be ashamed of the past. Times were different then and a lot of stuff went on that we wouldn’t do now.

Ahh Ian…. you jumped in there just likeone would expect of a true socialist!

Of course what was meant was, what a shame it is that Great Britain no longer has control and dominance over all those countries it used to have under subjection! Of course they were far, far better off in those days when Great Britain ruled with a rod of iron and held half the world under subjection!
The beginning of the end was that socialist poor excuse for a PM, Harold Wilson, who began to give it all away and since then all those poor people have suffered and starved in their local wars and famines, unable to rule themselves or feed their people….. which is why so many want The British to come back and rule them again………….. REBUILD THE EMPIRE I SAY!  Make Britain Great again!

Or even better, REBUILD THE GREEK EMPIRE while we’re at it…… give us another Alexander The Great and make Greece great as well….. trample the hoards and give them the kindly, fatherly dominance which they yearn for once again!

Come on, admit it Ian…. deep within your socialist heart, you just know that it makes sense and is all that will bring peace, prosperity, stability and love to the world once again! :rose:

    :bye:

Nobody says anything about being ashamed of the past. As you said, those were different times (the Dutch did some serious colonialism of their own too) but those times are no more.
Still that doesn’t mean (to me) that in the present day I think that we (be it the Dutch or the English) should return to the arrogance that led us to believe that it was the natural order of things for us to subject other people.

About having become a nation of whingers, if it’s any consolation: that’s not just the UK, just about everywhere people blame their sorry lives on anything but themselves.

Ireland has produced a winning team. Wales had the greatest sports team in history with their 1970s rugby team. Phil Bennett – JPR – Gareth etc
