So… how would you feel about this?

Each week – say every Saturday – you get a newsletter from GiH with the forum topics which have been started during the past week.

You would – of course – be able to unsubscribe if you didn’t want it, but the idea is that it would let everyone know what was happening on the site and what was new. Encourage people to come along and join in.

I mean we have over 3,000 registered users and about 10 regular users!

    What say you lot?

I see where you are coming from sjs. The problem with this idea is that there are no topics to mail to people, because no one is posting. What are you going to email if no one is posting?

The other issue is all the similar mail one receives daily. Often I don’t even bother opening newsletters, I bin them unless there is something very catchy in the title. It’s a hard one.

I hate to throw salt in the wound, but the new site is really not easy for many to use. I wish I could put my finger on what’s wrong.

Personally for me, it’s too difficult to navigate because of a lack of eye candy on the page. There is nothing to draw you into another thread, there is no tool within eyeshot to click on to take one to another thread or somewhere. I HATE having to scroll up and down to find a button to click on.  Many sites have a column on the right side with lines of first sentences from comments from other threads that one can click on. It entices one to continue.

As I am writing this…once I get down to the submit button, I always have to think, ‘what now.’  Mostly, I hate to have to scroll back up to find the button to take me to another page and try to figure what I haven’t read or where to go from there. Somehow you need to make it easier to navigate and add some eye candy.

Rather than a newsletter that could just get binned. I would make a plea with a catchy subject line to all those three thousand members that the site will die without their imput, and that they will lose a valuable asset which maybe they don’t need right now, but when they do need it to ask a question or get help it won’t be there….use it or lose it kind of thing.

But….if you go down that track, you need to make sure that when they click to come back, they will find it easy and enticing. Right now…the site needs eye candy. It’s bland.

Hopefully someone will comment now with some ideas and honest thoughts.

The site lacks cushions on the sofa.  B-)

And…fix the lagging when I type in the ‘nothing in particular’ thread or any long thread. It’s time consuming and very off putting to wait for many seconds as you backspace to correct a typo. Try it on your IPad to see what I mean. Type a reply and then backspace over what you type. It’s torture. Others have mentioned it before.

We all appreciate that every tiny change is difficult and time consuming for you.  On the other hand, I would be sad to watch the site die. A house is just a shell…to make it a home it needs decorating…cushions and pictures on the wall…eye candy

Can we go back to the old format?

The old format? We might have found that better after all it did mature over many a year and we got used to it and it functioned well. However remember the the reason for the change, all that spam etc sjs was having to deal with!! So, it was unsustainable. Do feel the new site still needs tweaking though…….hope sjs can manage that. Not really bothered about a newsletter. Seems that may just create more work for sjs?

Appreciate the work taken by having to remove spam, porn, etc., but how do other sites with similar formats manage?

Must say I prefer the other format. Re news letter I think Kiwi has a point in that if nobody is posting you have no newsletter.

    No.

This format offers much more possibilities for future development!

Meanwhile, I can’t subscribe to Kiwi’s point that there’s no point in having a newsletter if no one is posting. The point is that some threads are new; posting them in a newsletter will let everyone know and therefore hopefully bring in new people to post on them.

Unless people know there are threads, they’ve probably forgotten about the site. A newsletter will give them timely reminders.

But of course if you don’t want to receive the newsletter you can quickly unsubscribe!

How does a newsletter help people to post on this site?  I even have difficulty with the submit button which wants me to copy and paste or speak!

Sorry… Have to agree with others. This site is now so laborious , it’s a real pain to navigate & also nothing to retain any interest… Will look in again, in a few months to see how things are going…

Maybe time to listen to the customers?  I can understand your frustration and hard work Sean, but bottom line is people have to enjoy it to continue to use it. Some of the features are really good. Navigation is cumbersome and the pits.

    Don’t go sundodge.  :-(

I disagree. Numbers were dwindling on the old system. At least with this new system we can add more features and hopefully people.

I’ve had a number of “old” users tell me they like this new forum so it’s not all negative.

Wow, is there a brand new format that I am loving, or is the change because I just upgraded my iPad to IOS 9

I now have an informative sidebar on the left. yAy!

    :yahoo: I’m seeing cushions everywhere!

Brilliant sjs this is much better. Let’s all just check it out and iron out any wee glitches if any, and then you better send out a newsletter to everyone….maybe add a screenshot.

My only suggestion at this point would be for a slightly bigger font in the left sidebar. With the blue colour and small white font it’s quite difficult for me to see, and I imagine some of the other youngsters amongst us.  reb_bravo

Wow this is so much faster. For iPad users, definitely I think you need not only a slightly bigger font, but a bigger gap between lines for fat fingers to touch the correct line. Example in the ‘topics view list,’ and ‘new posts’ if possible

Pity I didn’t open GIH before I downloaded the new IOS 9 update so I could see if that has made a difference.

Am chuffed with the new format.

Well I just got a newsletter which prompted me to check out GiH again after all these years/months.  Like the look and feel Sjs very swish.  Just out of curiosity, clicked on ‘Most popular topics’ and was taken straight back in time 8 years to that prolific thread “Pet Peeves” on which I had commented so liberally about my own experiences with MIL etc. etc.  all those years ago!  Aah Rheia, Jenn, BostonChick, Mary – where are you all now?  Those were the days when GiH really was somewhere you would go and have a rant and go to bed feeling all warm and cuddly (pre-Facebook).  And even led to us having one or two get-togethers. Anyway I digress, good on you Sjs for the newsletter and if it keeps GiH in the mind, who knows some of us may even start posting again.  Though of course I am now an ex-foreigner living in Greece and often missing the old patrida but will stick my head in from time to see what’s going on. :bye:

Why thank you Kiwi.  Nice to see that you are keeping things going at least.  And even that Ian one is still around.  I haven’t managed to look through the other threads yet to see what has been happening around and about.  Of course it has been a traumatic time for all concerned.  I trust the GOMs are still around causing a fuss?  Look forward to catching up some more even though I am now languishing in the UK 😉

Ok I am confused now.  I did not personally “like” every post on this topic, but it seems to suggest that I did.  Why does it say – when I hover over the like button that I don’t have permission to unlike?? Just because I contribute to a thread, does not mean I like it.  I only found this out because I was trying to “like” your post Kolofarthos.  Also when it says 3+ (as in, I presume, 3 people liked this post) it would be nice when you hover over it for it to say who liked it – like it does on Facebook.

Yes, yes I know only back 5 minutes and already causing trouble!

Not sure what you mean, it doesn’t do it when I hover. Im Using iPad though. I can see kolly has 3 likes, if I hover and click it goes down to 2 because I already liked, so it will unlike.

If I look at other threads I see the little hand is white because I have not liked any of the posts.  But for this thread the little hand is red for all the posts as if I have liked all of them.  When I have not.  And when I hover over it to “unlike” it, I see this little pop-up message that says “Sorry you don’t have permission to unlike!”.  Very odd!

Never mind, I will not lose any sleep over it.  Though t’would be nice to see who has liked a post
