    A few years ago, on the recommendation of a member here, I opened an account with Jajah, and since then it’s worked very well for me, but now it’s closing down;

    http://www.jajah.com/shutdown/

I wonder if anyone knows of anything similar that I could sign up with instead.

To answer my own question, SPAXTEL looks like a possibility. Once Jajah’s closed I’ll give it a try and let you know how I get on –

    http://www.spaxtel.com/lp/best-jajah-alternative/index.html

And if that doesn’t work I may try Rebtel – http://www.rebtel.com

Skype’s usually fine, but sometimes it’s lousy and I like to have an alternative.

I have used Rebtel for a few years and find them brilliant and very very cheap for long distance calls.

to give it a go FREE
    use

Thanks very much indeed for that. I was hoping someone here would be able to help (again). I’ll switch as soon as Jajah closes, at the end of January. ic_smile

Been using this via PC for years
    I highly recommend
Unlike Skype Etc no one but you needs to sign up / register
You just use your ordinary phone to call anywhere

    Update:

Voipdiscount only seemed to be for Windows and I’ve got a Mac, so I’ve signed up with Rebtel. So far no probs. It’s easy to work, calls have been clear and Rebtel prices look about like Jahah.

    Thanks again ic_geek :))

Looked at rebel and note the prices are per month so If you don’t use your balance you lose it. Skype which I use does not do that. I also noted that prices were not really cheaper than skype which has a connection fee for each call. I want something simple I can use without a phone connection while I travel and will work with both apple and PC. All ideas welcome.

NOT AT ALL where did you get that from?
….I have Rebtel and you only need to “top up” when you run out. I have never lost any credits. I have a standing order with them for 10USD and when I run out of credit they just debit another 10USD

see account over two months……(all calls are to UK)

Whew! That’s a relief. When I saw Kiwi’s post i thought i’d screwed it up. Anyway, I’ve put £7 in my Rebtel a/c. I’ll see how much is left on the first on next month.

Incidentally, it’s a bugger what happened to Jajah. Something Spanish took it over and just closed it down. Wasn’t Thatcherite capitalism / deregulation / the free market supposed to give us more choice ? Or didn’t I understand ?

I must have read it wrong on the website, I found it convoluted and that’s what it came across as that your payment lasts for a month. Do you think it could have changed since you signed up grocer and you are on the old system. Will look at it again, maybe am just dumb. Anyway if it is cheaper than skype and easy to use via computer tablet etc, it will have me.

Saw this too while searching [/http://www.rebtel.com/en/International-Calling-Guide/VoIP/Just-Say-NO-to-Roaming-iPhone-Charges/url]

I guess if you have it grocer it will likely be the best. Which of the plans do you suggest. I have ipad, iPhone and PC laptop none of which are synched yet. Most likely I would use my iPhone in a hotspot as I don’t ever use monthly plans, moving around too much. Still trying to get my head around it all. My kids forced the ipad iPhone onto me after I had sworn I would never get into that rut.

Kiwi, I think its got to be between REBTEL and SKYPE……..I use Skype on my laptop & desk PC for video calls when connected to my home network or free WiFi, but I always use REBTEL for all my international voice calls.

Also with REBTEL I find the free calls to other REBTEL users, and the fact even non REBTEL users can phone you back FREE (see web site) very useful. But I admit to being a Rebtel fan as quality of call is always extremely good…..

So do you mean you use rebel with your mobile, or land phone? I guess that one could have both on one device and use what is best for each specific call. I hate the fact that skype has the call fee, because if an answer phone replies you pay more than the equivalent of what your call would have cost, and if you keep calling and the person is out, it mounts up with skype.

I have both my Greek land line, Greek sim and UK sim as registered numbers with REBTEL.
You can add several registered phone numbers to your account.
To explain a bit further….when I registered my UK Sim, I had the choice of four or five nearest cities to choose from to use as my “base”. Then when you ask Rebtel for the dial up number to be used it is based on that city….

TIP:- get a sim card for the country you are in and register it and that way you pay absolutely NO roaming charges. Also of course you can set your REBTEL account to accept call collect or not…

    To Sancho the Fat.
Had you looked properly you would have seen VOIPDiscount is available for a MAC
Unlike Rebtel you only pay a 5 cent connection charge to call UK landline numbers.
There are no additional per minute charges
Also the person you are calling does not need VOIPDiscount

Am in uk, got a lebara sim, cost five pound for 100 minutes to Europe, there was a special on for 200 min for same price that I did not see at the time. That’s what I am using at present and it applies to mobiles as well.

    Hi tpebop,

Yes, I see now. Sorry I didn’t notice before.

I originally went to the home page – http://www.voipdiscount.com/dashboard

Then I clicked on More Info, then System Requirements, which gave me

    http://www.voipdiscount.com/instructions#syst

which made it look as though I needed Windows, the bane of my life until I got the Mac.

If I need another string to my bow I’ll get VoipDiscount. The rates sound very good.

Hmmph. Used Lebara for a few international calls and already it shows my 100 minutes is down to 70 yet my phone record shows I made not half of that in calls. Crooks?

When I get into the mood for pfuffing around will join rebtel or the other one. All these websites are so convoluted.

Well a week into Lebara and am unhappy. Credit disappearing. Am thinking to try Lyco, saw them in a mall advertising cheap rates, less than lebara. Anyway flying out tomorrow from Blighty so can check it out in peace on a proper laptop and try and join rebtel as well. Don’t trust doing such stuff on a tablet.
